Question

Air Conditioner Won't work.

Sent to Car Experts April 20, 2007 2:07 p.m.

Pontiac Grand Am 2000 3.4L SE

These are part of the same problem. My heater switch has gone out for the second time on the first three speeds of the blower switch. When this happens the air conditioner will not work also on any blower speed. It was fixed the first time by the dealer and lasted a little over a year. They said something about a resistor problem the first time. But I would like to know exactly what it is and if I can fix it.

Optional Information:
2000 Pontiac SE 3.4L

Already Tried:
Grand Am Forum and I don't want to go back to dealer if I can help it this second time for same problem.

It is very likely thatr a bad resistor could cause you both problems. I would definatley get the blower motor resistor to cure your blower motor problem. As far as the a/c not running, the resistor is one of many items that control the a/c compressor, but being it is intermittent I would have to say yes it is the cause of that also. The resistor for the Grand am has been redesigned and should not give you anymore problems! Here is how to replace the resistor. I hope this helps!

You will first need to remove this panel to gain access.

  • Remove the retainers (2) from the instrument panel.
  • Remove the sound insulator (1).
  • Disconnect heater hose from duct.
  • Now you will have access to the resistor.
  • The blower motor resistor is located in the lower right hand corner of the HVAC module. This resistor is located between the blower motor and the front of the dash.

    1. Install the blower resistor.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    2. Install the blower resistor screws.

      Tighten
Tighten the screws to 1 N·m (9 lb in).
