I have a 1990 Pontiac Firebird, 3.1L, automatic transmission. The ignition key has a chip in it and has gone bad. Can I replace the key lock tumbler with a standard key lock tumbler?(no chip)

The only way to do this is to bypass the cars security system. The only way to properly do this is to get a resistance reading from the key. Do you still have a funtional key? It is not recommended to bypass this system though. What was wrong with the chip in your key?

Reply to BOBBY's Post: Sometimes the car will not start. When you turn the key on everything works but it will not even try to start. The security system is taking over. I can wait a while and it usually starts fine. I had the tumbler replaced about three years ago and now it is doing it again. I have heard from other people that GM had trouble with this system.
