my 95 pontiac grand am is having problems with its temp

my 95 pontiac grand am is having problems with its temp guage. it fluxuates. when im goin along it stays at the first bar. if i stop and idle, it will raise to about 220. is this a normal temp? the first few years i had the car, it didnt do this. any suggestions?

waterpump, thermo, other hoses etc.

Yes, that is completely normal. The thermostat open at 195 deg so it will run there when moving and air is passing over the radiator. Once you stop moving, there is no air flow and it has to rely on the electric fan. This fan is not programmmed to come on untiil approx. 226deg. This is by design and completely normal.

The movement is the fan cycling on and off. It will get overall lower when your moving.

You may have been running the A/C of defroster. The fan runs all the time if the A/C compressor is engaged.
