My 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager with a 3.3L flex fuel engine ...
Sent to Car Experts August 16 09:08 PM

My 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager with a 3.3L flex fuel engine has been doing some odd things. First the odometer, speedometer, and the instrument panel that indicates what gear the vehicle is in suddenly quit. After accidentally leaving a door open for 24 hrs the battery ran down I had it jumped, the instruments all came back. Then the fan motor relay for the radiator fan died. I replaced it and the fan works fine now BUT when the vehicle is first started all of the interior lights flash in the same sequence as my hazzards or blinkers would. They will flash around 25 times and stop for about 3 seconds and then start again, this goes on for a minute or so and then they stop completely. The only items left blinking are the little buttons that would indicate whether my A/C, recycle air, rear wiper, rear wiper washer, and rear wiper intermitten display continues to blink. After 20 minutes they stop. NOW my A/C stopped getting cold. coolant is 100lb pressure. I am lost! Plz help!

I listed it all in with my question. I need to know WHY my A/C has now died after just fixing the overheating issue that was caused by the raditor fan relay and I have had some other annoying electrical issue since replacing that relay AND after taking it into a shop for an oil change and tire rotaion 2 days later my A/C is blowing warm air. it was ICE COLD! I am a mother of 5 and this is Florida, it is stiffling hot here and my youngest is an infant. I must figure out what is wrong with this vehicle asap but do not have the money for a conventional mechanic at the moment.

Reply to Paul's Post: I just puled up every wiring diagram that I could find myself and have made a list of items that I thought could be connected but I am just not sure. I just don't know if it is a coincidence that all of these things have happened and that there could be one underlying root cause or if there are multiple small causes. I really appreciate any help that you can give to me as I am bright but this is just not my area of expertise. I only work on my own vehicles out of necessity not choice;)

When I turn ON the A/C there is a hissing sound that comes from what would seem to be behind the glove compartment. It gets loud and then fades out but not entirely. The air gets slightly cooler than if it was just the fan. When I turn the fan off I hear the hissing sound again. I thought that should perhaps help. I will go switch the relays and count the flashes of light and get back with you. I cannot thank you enough!!

As to the flashing interior lights it is in 3 sequences of 50 flashes each then it stops. Even the light around my ignition switch is included. ALL of the interior lights are affected. Now, this hissing sound is more of a metallic hissing sound; if that makes sense. It only starts when I turn on the A/C and like I said it gets quite loud and then it quiets a bit then it will build back up and so forth. It makes me think of pressure building up and then releasing. It is specifically behind the glove compartment on the passenger side. The hose that comes from where you would add coolant/freon, that no longer gets cold. It use to. I know, I have touched it before while tinkering around. The heat works tremendously!:( Anyway, again, I thank you for your help.

Will do. I will have to get a continuity instrument from a friend and get back with you later today Thanks again!! Oh yes, what noise am I looking to hear? I know that the clutch engaging is supposed to sound like a large CLICK. Is that what you want me to listen for?

No, it sounds nothing like that at all. I hear the clutch engage and there are no other odd noises coming from the engine compartment. It all comes from inside that passenger department, right behind the glove box. Actually a little below it. I can put my hand on a seam in the plastic molding and cn feel just a touch of coolness, and I do mean a touch; coming from a small seam. The blower works great, both front and back. The Hissing noise reminds me of what my home A/C unit sounds like when it turns off. Like a release or building of pressure then a release. It sounds metalic in nature as if it were coming from something metalic, almost as if it was in a tin can. It will be later today before I can check the wires.

To get to this I have to deactivate the airbags and then remove the righ hand side of the dash area, correct? Once I access this what do I do from theree? Do I manually open his door or is it a part that I can replace?

Like I said, I can feel a tiny amount of cool air escape a crevice in the platic molding under the glove compartment. When I turn the compressor on the air that is blowing out is colder than what it would be if it was just the fan air. You can feel a small difference, even when the van is stiffling hot. So, yes, if you would walk me through this I will be forever grateful. Even if it does not work I will most definitely send you payment and would send more as you have been unbelievably helpful.

Reply to Paul's Post: You know how the answer to any question is usually the simplest one? WEll, I have had this little naggging feeling since I started this eneavor and I finally gave into it and followed my intuition. The person who did the check on my A/C is the same unscrupulous little prig that tried to bold faced lie to me antell me that my very clean air filter needed to be replaced because it had been in my van for over 10,000 miles. Little did he know that I am not an idiot female and I was actually the one who put the filter in less than 2,000 miles ago. Well as it all turns out he was lying about my A/C. It looks as if he released the coolant to pay me back for not believing his blatant lie about the air filter (I called him on it) and then told me that the coolant levels were fine and tried to get me to rack up a huge mechanic's bill. I went ahead and bought a low pressure gauge and checked it myself and what do you know. Almost NOT a drop of coolant! I went ahead and recharged the system which too 3 full cans of R-134, plus the oil and all of the other stuff required. I completed the process for under 50.00 and it too just about a half hour of my time. I found out for certain that the guy released my coolant by going back to the garage and flat out telling his boss what I suspected and he was furious; as it turned out I was NOT the first person to have complaints about this guy's selling tactics but I was the first one who had enough guts to walk in with proof as to his lies. He was stupid enough to charge me for the A/C check and give me a receipt for a pressure check that stated tha the issue was not with the level of coolant. One of the other guys who worked there actually came forward and said that he learned after the fact that the coolant has been released from my vehcle and that they guy was bitchng about "Ms. Know it all" and the air filter incident. LOL I am just glad that it is overwith. Now, I shall endeavor to fix this pesky flasing light issue. Thank you so much for all of your help! You have been wonderful. You made me really miss having access to Good 'Ol Chilton's. Hanes just doesn't cut it sometimes. If you feel like helping me figure out the lighting issue I would be very glad for the help. I wll release the funds for payment.
You were great!!!If you ever get to Jacksonville, Fl th drinks are on me;)
