I have a 1990 Plymouth Laser Turbo 5 sp. I have 2 problems. First, the cruise control decided to call it quits. It was intermittent for awhile and then quit altogether. Local mechanic doesn't have a clue.
Second, a/c compressor blew up from lack of oil. I have had it flushed a couple of times but mechanic said whole system needs to be dismantled and parts replaced. Can't seem to reach dryer inside car.   Lastly, temp gauge acts funny when I turn the ignition on. If I tap on it, it returns to normal operation. Something loose?

Thanks!

Cruise control is MOST important but would love to get a/c working again without spending fortune. Time to look in wrecking yard? Thanks

I need to where and how to check the computer for diagnostic codes. I did it once before but it has been a very long time. The cruise control does not work at all. The "resume" light does not come on, but I don't remember if it ever did since the cruise control has not worked in awhile. It sounds like checking the error codes is the way to go, so I would just like to know where it is and where to put the probes. I have a DVM.

Well I checked the outputs with a DMV but I am not sure it is responsive enough to keep up with the changing voltages. It seemed like the voltage went to OL (overload) and then went back to 0 in a regular, up and down fashion. This was with the engine running and the cruise turned on but not set.
There was no signal with the control turned off.

I checked the outputs with an analog meter, but maybe I need more sophisticated equipt; I don'tknow. The readings were the same. The needle went up and down in a regular manner. Nothing erratic. Oh well, I guess I have to take it to the shop. don't know what else to do.

Well I guess you have helped me as much as you can..
I guess the problem is in the motor that actuates the accelerator or .....

I have checked it with a DVM and I do not see a problem. The only thing I notice is that the resume
light does not come on when I move the selector there. But that may be normal anyway. So I don't think the problem is with the cruise module. Maybe the problem is with the actuator or some other obscure part, even the switch. I guess I will just take it into the garage and let them tell me; otherwise I feel I am just guessing.

I think I goofed. I figured I was doing something wrong. The pic isn't very good, which is why I had a hard time figuring out where the probe socket is. I guess I have to look again. Will be in touch.

I follow directions and the dash shows nothing. I don't know what the VOM is for if the dash shows the code....
But I did the procedure several times and no code showed up on the dash.

I tried the paperclip and same results. Nothing on dash. I think I give up for now.

I would do just that if I could find the module;
I still do not know what it looks like. I saw a wiring diagram of it and it looks very large. But I see nothing under the left side of the dash that looks that big. In fact the only thing that remotely looks like a module is a small black box mounted near the floor and it is just a relay. I know this because I opened it up.

What is I/P? That is a really poor pic of the module. The part looks very small. That pic should have been rejected if it was used in a repair manual.

I already have a wiring diagram, but it does not pinpoint the module. I know the repair manual would show this and if I had any sense, I would have already picked it up at the local auto parts store.

I'll take one more look at it. Its pretty warm outside I'm not inclined to spend a lot of time
looking. I just don't see a module with so many wires going to it, but I haven't actually laid in there on my back to look.

Well I found the module. Couldn't be in a worse spot. Would have to unbolt it from the chassis to even have a chance to look at it. There is supposed to be a self test connector on that thing. It has ONE wire going to it. Haven't the foggiest idea on how to use that.

I think the connector I was probing went to the main control module? All these modules are getting me mixed up. But that module I found is pretty big so maybe that is the main one. I can't imagine another one lurking around but I know there are.

That module is up so high and so obscured by other things that I can't even see the wires going to it. If I feel up to it tomorrow, I might see if I can unbolt it and let it hang. BTW, the test connector I was probing had several wires going to it, so I don't think that was the test plug shown on the cc module. The wiring diagram seems to show 1 wire going to it. But the only way to tell for sure is to actually see it (if I could only move other things out of the way. I still wonder if that is the main computer(ECM?)

I took the car to a garage and they said the actuator (motor/gear assembly) under the hood was bad. I took it off the car and did some routine checking with a DVM. It APPEARS that one of the mechanical switches is not operating correctly. There are 2 switches that are identical to each other. One switch clearly does not work the way the other one does. I also took another cover off which exposed a small motor with a small nylon gear on the end. I really didn't have a way of testing the motor. I didn't want to connect it directly to 12 volts but I guess I could have. Maybe I still will and see if it turns. There is much I can't see without taking the whole thing apart which I rather not do. There are gears inside and wires from those switches going inside so maybe there is another motor inside. I don't know. But it seems that switch, even though very simple, is not working right. Maybe I will just go out to the wrecking yard tomorrow and see if I can find an identical part. I hear that the turbo uses a different one from the non-turbos. Since I don't have a new switch anyway (or soldering iron) maybe I will just buy another actuator.
