1976 Plymouth Volare, 318, 105K miles. Ran perfectly and then just didn't want to stop. Diagnosed it with a fuel issue, i.e., no fuel to the carburetor (sp?) but was in the line. Replaced fuel filter and mechanical fuel pump, confirmed fuel to carburetor but now it won't start. It is sluggish. Also replaced distributor cap & rotor and new plug wires. Confirmed firing order and checked for tightness. Made sure battery was fully charged. Any thoughts?

Yep. Just went out and put the old distributor cap back on and no difference between new and old. I am dumbfounded. Only other things I can come up with is bad coil, bad ignition control module, or regulator. Going to replace plugs now and, I guess, coil. If nothing, then I guess head for control module. This has gotta be a spark issue somewhere. UGH!

If you have spark at the plugs its not a ignition problem.pour a little gas into the carb and see if it will start, get back with me on this

Already did this prior to your advice and got a brief turn over, backfire, and then back to the non-start position again. I have also checked the choke w/trying to start it w/the butterfly open but doesn't make a difference. I just tried it again and the same identical result.

Ok,we are getting closer the back fire indicates that the firing order or the valve timing is off.Take the # 1 spark plug out and stick your finger into the hole, have a friend bump the motor over until you hear the air being forced out. stop, take a socket wrench and put it on the crankshaft bolt at the crank pulley turn untill the timing marks line up. Remove the distributor cap and see if the rotor is pointing to # 1 on the cap.if it isnt and you have not had the distributor out of the car then the timing chain has skipped a tooth. If it is pointing to #1 then look at the firing order, check timing.
