'88 Isuzu pickup 4x4 with a 2.6 liter 4 cylinder engine
Sent to Car Experts September 29 05:35 PM

I have an '88 isuzu pickup 4x4 with a 2.6 liter 4 cylinder engine. My problem is this... the engine cracks over well and then starts, but after a second or two the engine dies. After 5 or 6 tries, the engine sustains inself and runs fine after that. I have found that when I remove the relay labeled (charge) from the fuse box next to the battery, the engine starts and runs fine. I can then replace the fuse, with the engine running, and all is well. But then, while driving, the fuel low level light, the battery (altnerator) light, and the brake light all come on at once. At this same time, the heater fan stops working. Eventually, after driving for awhile, these warning lights go out, and at the same time the heater fan works again. Any ideas?

For some reason Isuzu has always run the heater fan off the alternator if the alternator goes bad the heater fan shuts down.

I suspect your alternator is going bad, or the connection between the battery and the alternator has a problem. I would have it load tested to be sure but I think you will find it to be the problem.

If the charging system is inoperative, the fuel pump does not stay running and the engine stalls.

If the fuel pressure is dropping off after the engine starts. Check the charge light. It should go out after the engine starts. If it is still on after the engine starts, check the voltage on the L terminal of the alternator(when the problem is occurring). If no voltage is present, check the powers and grounds for the alternator and repair as necessary. If there is no voltage at the L terminal and no other problems are found, replace the alternator.
