Have 93 explorer 4x4 4.0 v6 manual. In rural alaska so taking it to a shop is not a option. Vehicle acted like it was having a spark problem. Cutting in and out and sputtering. After putting it in my private shop vehicle wwould start intermittently nbut back fire terribly. Then plugs would foul and vehicle would not run. I would then clean the plugs and vehicle would run smooth at mid RPM but low RPM it would either run rough and quit or again backfire terribly. have changed these componets-
PCM(computer), coil pack, mass air flow sensor, both O2 sensors, crankshaft position sensor. fuel pump(getting good pressure at engine), baps, swapped the DDIS and throttle position with running vehicle and still no joy.......vehicle gets no trigger signal from DDIS and low voltage from the spout wire connecting the PCM and DDIS.
NEED HELP>>>>>>>>>>>>>theo

Optional Information:
1993 Ford explorer 4.0 v6

Already Tried:
changed plugs, plug wires, coil pack, PCM ,O2 sensors , mass air flow sensor, crankshaft position sensor, swapped DDIS and throttle pos sensor with running vhicle, baps, checked continuity from the key, have no trigger signal from the DDIS and very low voltage(less then 1volt from the SAW wire from the PCM to the DDIS.

Reply to bryan piland's Post: Hello Brian, This vehicle has no distributor. every thing is contolled thru the PCM and DIS that sends spark to the coil pack. This particular model also has no camshaft position sensor and to answer your question at this time the vehicle has no spark. we have tried to pull a trouble code from a autoxray scanner but it wont pull the code unless the vehicle is running(go figure????) need help>>>>>>>>>>thanks. look forward to your reply and I do plan on paying for this service if I can get any sort of hint as to me problem

k    sorry bout that for some reason i was thinking it had the combo
dont know what i was thinking i knew better mustve been distracted by the kids and thinking about another reply i was posting
again i apologize

k to your problem

it definitely sounds like a firing problem

while rare but possible i have seen bad computer power and/ or ground leads at battery, starter, block, firewall, and/or body corroded, loose and/or damaged cause this problem

around 90-98 cadillacs are extremely common with this problem they have over 20 total on vehicle and they will corrode, loosen, crack,or break
in some instances i've seen em operate in exact manner your experiencing, some backfire real bad and keep literally exploding mufflers because of the backfire until they bring it in had 1 guy go through 3 mufflers i think i wouldve got the hint but he thought it may have been a cheap product from his muffler shop        have also seen in rare cases that it knocked out the computer from a low voltage power surge caused by a bad connection

being in that environment i'm sure all these types of scenarios are accelerated so could be a definite possibilty of corrosion related problem
which i bet money on it

check these out and let me know hopefully we're lucky

if not then it has to be a breakage or at least faulty wiring somewhere and we'll find it

Reply to bryan piland's Post: Thanks Brian. I have been checking the ground continuity and have long suspected that this may be the problem. I am hoping I can still communicate with you until I get this problem solved and will be more than happy to keep paying for tips when I need them. I will keep yol updated on the progress. I think we have ground continuity but like you said it may be weak. So I will go from here and see if I can get this to run. Vehicle is very clean and has only been In Alaska for a year and half (purchased used). It came out of Seattle and has about 120k miles on it but very well taken care of. anyhow will stay in touch...Thanks Theo

thank you theo

k      being from seattle it was still in that type of climate i.e. extreme weather changes and salt from icy roads and has been subjected to it

'93 was still the squarish front ends like on the '91 right ????    wasnt thinking they went to the rounder front end till '94

i have a friend with a '91 same engine only 2WD though had 500k miles last time i talked to him about 3-4 yrs ago and i still see him driving it around        only major work he's done is a transmission at about 185k          he is very particular and prompt with his maintenance and servicing               when i say major i mean complete motors, trannys, transfer cases, differentials        maintenance is going to be with all vehicles and typical things will wear out and require replacement            of course he's replaced alternator, starter, water pump, oil pump, etc. all maintenance items           am thinking he's put a couple oil pumps in it but thats part of what keeps motors alive proper oil pressure             more times than not a weak oil pump is what caused a major component to fail

i know this information is slightly irrelevant at the moment just though i would give you one of the best case scenarios of life for that model              i am not much of a ford fan to tell you the truth but i loved those explorers

and do you know that paxton and whipple both produce a supercharger for that engine and in case study with bolted on a factory 4.0 with 100k they did lower it and put adequate tires on it but if i remember right it clocked a mid 12 quarter mile

and yes feel free to ask anything else you may have questions or doubts about

Reply to bryan piland's Post: Hello Brian, thankyou for the reply. any info on making this vehicle better is appreciated. i
will try and track down as many grounds on this puppy as I can. Oh, I know all about distractions and kids. Got 3 of them under 7 years old. definite carnival. Anyways that supercharger for the 4.0 sounds cool. this engine is clean but tired so at some point i will need to rebuild it and possibly pump it up. Will keep you aprised . Have a great day and thanks again.
