engine trouble

I have a1976 chevy pickup 350 v8 hei distributer 2 w d edlebrock 600 carb. The engine will turn over but wont start. I have problems with engine run on and some backfirering trough carb and exhast but not regularly. Other facts engine is new two years ago nov. .
