My sons 1996 S10 pickup automatic shifts fine from

My sons 1996 S10 pickup automatic shifts fine from first to second but when its time to shift to thrd its like nothing is there it just revs up it has plenty of torque in 1,2 and reverse wha could cause this

You are going to have to get the codes checked.Autozone will do it for free if one is in your area.It's possibly a bad valve body or shift solenoid is the cause.You should also drop the pan after the codes are checked to see if any metal is in the pan.
