low coolant light on 1994 Olds Delta 88 Royal

i have an 1994 oldsmobile delta 88 Royal LS -3.8 L engine - with 43,000 miles. The low coolant light comes on intermittantantly, but there is plenty of coolant in the overflow tank. can it be the thermostat or the water pump or just an idiot light? CAn I harm the engine by driving like this if the temperature doesn't exceed 192 degrees?
