I have a 96 oldsmobile ninety eight with 81 k miles. Approx 2500 miles ago the motor has developed a miss - hesitation noticeable after OD was engaged and only under light acceleration. The miss is reminescent of a bad plug or wire but those have been replaced along with a new oxygen sensor months ago. The check eng light would come on sproadically and I did get a code of P1406 but that didnt tell me anything useful. ALSO, WHEN I CHECK THE RADIATOR with an infrared thermo - the temp registers 145 deg. I also noticed there was no pressure in the the rad hoses. I replace the thermostat and check the old one - it was working but the new one seems to be opening more. I took the car to a shop and they verified the thermo was working properly. Theu also performed a presure check and said the pressure was fine. The hoses are still soft even after driving for miles. Is this normal? My thought was tht the skip may have been caused due to the engine running too cold?? Thanks

Hello Bo and welcome to Just answer.com, Super mechanic here. About your 96 Olds 98.

The cooling system pressure, (or no pressure in this case) is most likely due to a bad pressure cap, not allowing the system to reach the proper pressure. Alot of times the cap is overlooked.

As far as the "miss", I would want for you to drive the car until you feel the concern and as you are cruising and it starts to do it, just touch the brake pedal slightly. Enough to make the brake lights come on but not enough to actually apply the brakes and see if the engine seems to smooth out. I am thinking that the problem you are having may just be the torque converter clutch going in and out, in which case there may be a problem in the TCC system rather than the engine performance, thanks

Reply to Super mechanic's Post: Thanks Super mechanic! I just drove the car and did as u suggested. it did seem to smooth out after just touching the brake. Do u think the TCC needs to be calibrated or do u think there may be other serious issues. I have an extended warranty. Shouold I take it to a GM dealer? Thanks, Bo

I thought so. By all means I would say to take it to a dealer if they will cover it onder the extened warranty. There is most likely the TCC solenoid that is bad. It is inside the trans. and they will know just how to do the proper repair.
