hi, i have an 1986 dodge ramcharger, 360, auto, 4 wheel drive that has an electrical problem. about a month ago i put a new battery (optima), and a new altinator in it. since then when i run it the battery overcharges and leaks the water out of the breathers. you can also smell the acid getting hot. i changed out the battery and had the altinator checked out and all is good. any ideas on what may be happening?

hi,
I'm not sure which alternator is in there. there is no label on it. but i can tell you that it is the same as the one that came out of it. it does have two fan belt pullies if that helps. it is brand new and i did take it back out and have it tested. is there a way to tell which one that it is? also, what would be the diagnosis of a bad voltage regulator?

Hello,

Should have alternator tested on vehicle with loads on it. On some of these vehicles, the voltage regulator was located on the firemall or in a computer type regulator in the engine compartment. The regulator controls the voltage to hold a 14 volts at idle and high RPM. Here is a pictur of the regulator in this diagram amd the overall diagram of the charging system.
