1990 Mitsubishi GSX all wheel drive. Camber is bad on ...

Sent to Car Experts October 02, 2005 10:05 a.m.

1990 Mitsubishi GSX all wheel drive. Camber is bad on rear. Major inside tire wear both sides. I installed new stock springs but did not help? If I jack the car up the tires will straighten out. What can I do or what else should I look for.

Do you know what the reading and the spec is. You can't go by eye. Some vehicles are actually designed that way.

90% of the time, severe inside wear is caused by a toe out condition, not camber.

Toe-in is 1\16 of an inch on the rear tires. The tires wore down to the chords on the inside meaning negative camber or toe out. You can see how they lean in on the top of the tire. The manual say's there is no camber adjustment to the rear. Whats next?

There may not be an adjustment, but it's very unusual for both sides to be bent the same way. You need to know what the spec is and what the measurement is. This very well could be normal. You need to do a wheel alignment and not guess at things like this.

I was at the top of my class in wheel alignment. Most cars have adjustments. I am not a full time alignment tech now but have been a mechanic for 20 years. The tire wear tells me there is a problem and yes both side were identicle. If you don't know of any common problems and repairs to the rear suspension with the 1990 GSX, thanks for trying

No. It is independant but is not a straight axle. It has upper and lower arms and a trailing arms to hold in place. Kind of like a front end.

OK, I've done a few alignment too, about 35 years worth. There is no duplicate problem that has simultaneously occurred to both rear wheels, especially if you changed the springs already. I don't know where your getting your toe reading if you can't tell me the camber reading. It appears your trying to align your car with a tape measure. This isn't going to cut it. You need to come up with some specs and actual readings before you can even know if you have a problem and which wheel its in.

I am sorry I don't have the alignment equipment. Just was wondering if there was a common problem with this model that would avoid taking to an alignment shop. I have a hard time paying someone to repair my vehicles. You may understand my concept. My motto is there is nothing I can't fix. Well except for this. But you did help bring up other questions. Maybe the alignment is ok. Maybe my daughter just loaded the car to heavy when she moved to college. I have got some checking to do on that. Thanks. I will keep this site info for the future. Always helps to discuss problems with other Mechs.
