91 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL Auto Trans Problems

Sent to Car Experts September 12, 2005 11:36 p.m.

I have a 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL having automatic transmission problems. The car will shift perfectly at times, drop out of overdrive occassionally, or stay in third gear only. I usually can turn the car off and then back on and it will shift perfectly again. I took it to a transmission repair shop and their diagnosis showed no codes. They had the car three days and found nothing wrong. The mechanics said it was either a neutral safety switch, another sensor, or the ignition switch/locking mechanism. They did not believe that the problem was mechanical. The transmission shop told me to bring it back when the transmission totally fails to work. With gas as expensive as it is what is your diagnosis or what would be my best plan of action in correcting the problem? Thanks!!!

REPLIED Check Mark

Sounds like a problem with the torque convertor slipping,if the fluid looks good you can try adding some type of friction modifier to the trans fluid(used in differentials) to help patch the Torqure convertor clutch.I have done this on many different car lines with pretty good results,it will not hurt the trans.

I decline to pay this as I have already had this checked. I do appreciate your help though.
