I have a 1990 Mercury Sable. It's an old car, and not much to look at, but it's been very reliable. Recently, it has started to hesitate while accelerating. I can still get to where I want to go, but it's gradually getting worse.
I have only a limited knowledge of engines and engine repair. I know this particular model is a fuel injected engine (learned the hard way on that by running out of gas once!) My guess is that it might be the fuel filter, or the fuel injectors, or possibly the fuel pump. Since it's an older car, I really don't want to spend a lot of money on it. what do you think would be my first course of action?

thanks
Greg

Reply to Virtual Wrench's Post: I'm not sure about either. The odometer shows 72000 and change. it only goes five places. I received this car from my in-laws, and they received it from some one else. so it could have been a very long time.

Thanks,

The first thing to do is replace the fuel filter, it is often overlooked for years..

If the problem persists, i would suspect the fuel pump, as they are common to fail. A fuel pressure test with a gauge will confirm this.

I really think you have a good shot at the filter correcting the problem.

It all started turning bad pretty quickly. it really only took about a week, before it was really annoying. in the beginning, it was only a little. and now you can feel it when only idling.

you still think its the fuel filter?
