Sent to Car Experts July 13, 2006 8:50 p.m.

I have a 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis. I am unable to shift the car into gear from park. The only way I can get it out of park is to pull the shifter towards me when the car is off. Turn the car on and then shift it into gear. What is wrong that it won't shift into gear properly?

Thank you.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

first you need to check the fuse in the fuse panel it is number 1 and number 5. Next you need to make sure you have brake lights because the brake switch controls the shift lock so you can shift out of park if you have brake lights then you will need to check for power at the shift interlock soliniod this is at the bottom of the steering column and will have 2 wires comming out of the switch. Black, light green, and pink with orange. Make sure you have power on the light green and the pink with orange if you do then you have a faulty shift solinoid. If you do not have brake lights then you have a bad stop lamp switch. More then likly your problem is with the switch. This is mounted on the pedal and is held in place with a pin. Remove the pin and install a new switch by just sliding it on.

Relist: I still need help.
I followed your directions and checked for brakes lights first. I had no break lights, so then Ireplaced the #1 and 5 fuses, but still no break lights and unable to shift out of park. If I remove the #5 fuse I can shift into all gears, but I still have no break lights or back-up lights. So my question is what to do about fuse #5 and what should I do next to get my brake and back-up lights working.

Please help. Thank you!

REPLIED Check Mark

Make sure fuses 1 and 5 are installed. Once you look at the new switch you will be able to locate it real easy. To replace it all you will do is pull a pin out and slide the new one on. Please let me know

Thanks for the question and have a good eveing

I replaced the brake on/off switch and fuse 1 and 5, still no brake lights, back up lights, nor am I able to shift out of park. If I remove fuse 5 I am then able to shift into gear. What does fuse 5 do? What can I do now regarding my brake and back up lights.

Thank you very much!
