i have a 93 mercury sable that suddenly started smoking ...

i have a 93 mercury sable that suddenly started smoking really bad and running ruff. the temp gauge goes almost to hot, but it has not overheated. also when the car starts to smoke there is a strong smell of coolant. i thought the head was blown because of the smoke, but there is no water in the oil.
