Question

1996 Mercury Sable -speed sensor

Sent to Car Experts August 09, 2005 2:46 p.m.

Where is the speed sensor on a 1996 Mercury Sable? The repair manual isn't too explicit, it says it is mounted on the transaxle case, but we can't find it. Is it on the driver side? We have done everything except stand on our head to find it, to no avail. The picture that shows where it is dark and not to helpful in finding this sensor.
Can you help?
Thanks

Ok you have a 3.0 OHV engine which is good it takes up less room and there is more of a chance you will see it. Look down between the engine and the firewall. You should see the spark plugs. Look in the area of the first and second spark plug. Now go down further to the transmission. You should see where the axle goes into the transmission. Directly on top of that part of the transmission you should see some heat proof covers. The speed sensor is under those covers. According to the repair manual you are to pull the exhaust down to change it. With the engine you have you can change it without dropping the exhaust, but most of the ones I have done have been siezed fast. You may need to break the old one up to get it to come out.
