Try this and reply with the results.

Drive straight ten feet with the switch in low. Now go to neutral and hold the brakes. While holding shift to 4 high and wait for it to shift before going onto 2wd or 4 auto. Reply if this does not work. When the dash indicator changes it has shifted.

Reply to Chris (aka-Moose)'s Post: I did what you suggested, and my car goes into gear smoothly, however, when I go over 50 mph, the engine "hums." As I go faster than 50, the "hum" gets louder. The tires are almost new, but the "hum" makes it sound like its in low gear, but now I'm sure it's not.

At 50mph in low range you will be in 5th gear running about 4000 rpms.

If you you can drive over 60 then you are not in low.

Check these for me.

Also in manual 1st gear in low the max speed will be near 15 where as in high it will be near 30mph

Reply to Chris (aka-Moose)'s Post: I just drove 70 mph, and the car ran fine, except for the high "humming" noise I hear. It makes me think it's stuck in low, but after I did what you said I had heard it click into overdrive. Could it be some sort of relay?

If you can go 70 then your not in low range. When does the hum start (speed) does it remain as you continue to speed up? If you get off the gas does it cease?

Does swerving left to right affect it?

What is the lowest 4x4 selection 2 high or AWD or AUTO

Reply to Chris (aka-Moose)'s Post: Th hum starts at about 35 - 40 mph. As I go faster it gets louder. When I get off the gas it does not cease. When I swerve to the left at 60 mph the sound stops! The only 4x4 selection is high - 4x4. Then there is a low to the right. To the left is auto, where I always have it.
Thanks Chris!

I believe you have a bearing noise at one of the wheel bearings. I recommand you run the vehcile while on a rack in 4 high and see if the wheel bearings are produceing a noise when listening with a stethescope.
