1986 mercedes benz E300 3.0 liter engine number M103.983
Sent to Car Experts February 16 11:55 AM

I have an ’86 mercedes-benz I just bought and noticed that the oil pressure was at 0. I changed the original oil filter and oil and the pressure seemed to go to normal. The only problem now is that sometimes the low oil light comes on. I have no leaks, oil seems right on the dipstick. This is all in idle, once I’m on the road the oil picks up to normal, but the oil light seems to turn on and then right back off. What can be wrong there? I’m starting to hear the lifters make racket as well.

That doesn't sound good. The first thing you need to do is have the pressure manually checked to find out if it really is that low. I wouldn't drive it in the meantime. Your going to end up trashing that motor if you do.

Well, that will require the opinion of a technician that is inspecting the car but at the very least, you would be replacing the oil pump and pick up screen. You may ultimately have to do a complete rebuild but after inspection, the technician should be able to tell you your options. I would be sure to try to find a shop that specializes in Mercedes as they are an unusual animal and requires familiarity with the product.
