Why would my temp gauge read high and the antifreeze be full.

it is an 81 chevy lumina and the gauge jumped to 260 degrees but when I checked the antifreeze level in the reservoir it was half full.

The reservoir is a small part of the cooling system.Several questions,and I can tell you exactly why your car overheats.1.Does car overheat in traffic or freeway.2. Does car start climbing in temp and go straight to overheat,or is over a period time,with temp gage fluctuating?
