I have a 1998 3.8L Grand Prix with about 130,000 miles. On occasion when I take my foot off the gas to slow down for a stop sign, it dies. It always restarts. The problem seems to happen on days with high winds, especially when I'm driving in a cross wind with the wind blowing from the passenger to driver side. (I know that sounds crazy). It's recently been tuned up by a mechanic. Any ideas? Otherwise been a very reliable car for 10 years.

Hi, welcome to jA.

  • If the check engine lamp has not come on since the problem began...than this sounds like a typical case of a faulty IAC (Idle Air control) valve. The valve becomes gummed with carbon and intermittently will stick slightly open, causing the engine to stall when comming to a stop. The valve is correctly diagnosed through a factory level scan tool. Along with it's replacment, you should have the throtle body cleaned as well as the IAC ports in the throtle body.
