Do an inspection on these components. If all checks out, it will have to have a factory level scanner installed to diagnose the electronic shift control module.

Reply to Virtual Wrench's Post: This answer was not enough to get my truck fixed. It still has to go through more diagnostic testing. All of the items listed where tested and did not prove to be the culprit of the problem.

Unfortunatly that is about as far as you can go without hooking up a scan tool to access the control module. I wish there was a common "quick fix" solution i could give you, but there isnt just one thing common that goes wrong.

Reply to Virtual Wrench's Post: Thank you for your initiate help. The list of items you sent to me was exactly the same list the mechanic had printed out from his diagnostic program. They did however replace the 4 wheel drive module. But that was not the answer. I think my next step is to actually take it to a ford dealership. The mechanic I took it to said he had gone as far as he could, something about he can only know so much of what "Ford" does?

I meant 'initial' help. Sorry about the mis-spelling. One thing I forgot to tell you is that they did get to change was that now the '4x4 HI' light is blinking on the dashboard. What does that mean? Are there any types of vehicles that you do not commonly hear about problems on?

The light will come on when there is a failure in the system, it is used in conjunction with the scan tool to retrieve any diagnostic service codes that have been stored when the light came on. This will greatly reduce the troubleshooting process. The reason the mechanic said that is because without the scanner that ford will use, he cant do much else. It looks like ya might just have to take it in :-(.

Best of luck!
