What is the knocking sound coming from my axle?

I have a 99 Mazda 626 with 85k miles. The problem began with in the last 100 miles, how soon does it need to be fixed? During my last oil change they mentioned something about work needing to be done on my axle. They didn't say anything about the CV jount but i know that is a common problem. How much is this going to cost to fix, my last mechanic estimated $300, what do you think?
