Sent to Car Experts August 05, 2006 4:07 p.m.

I have a 1989 Mazda 323 SE. 4dr, non-turbo, front wheel drive, and I'm having problems getting the spindle nut back on due to slight damage to the threads after the old spindle nut was stripped on it. I got it off byt carefully chisling it off, but now after cleaning up the threads with a thread file, I can't get a nut on it. Part of my question is whether the right rear spindle is left or right hand thread. There seems to be some question. I know logic would dictate that it be right-hand thread, but I have both spindle nuts and the left-hand threaded on seems to go on a bit better then the right-hand thread. I have been trying, and I have asked auto parts guys, looked through manuals, and still have no idea. I don't wanna have to replace the spindle. The threads just don't seem to be damaged that badly. Please help. Thanks.

Sincerely,

The right hand nut should go on clockwise.

Are you sure the replacement nut has the correct thread pitch for the old spindle?

You could try running the relevant sized die from a tap and die kit around the damaged threads to further repair them.

well the right hand nut doesn't even start, but the left hand nut goes on for several turns before stopping prematurely. I need to know the size of the spindle, and whether or not it actually is left or right handed for dye purposes. It is the right rear spindle in question.

You're right about the left handed thread Mark...not only did I used to work on older Mazdas a lot but I've owned a few including GLC's and 323's and I have an 88 323 hatchback right now with 72K original miles. Anyway...I can't remember which side is backwards but one of them is and it's the same on 626/MX6/Ford Probe. It doesn't matter for a die, you just turn it the opposite way. Try turning it the opposite way and if you still can't get it to start then get a die...it should either be 12 or 14x125.

Wanna cheap hop up for your 323? I have a K&N replacement air filter in mine with a 94-95 Ford Aspire Roller Cam and followers...direct swap and a lot more bottom end and overall torque!
