Sent to Car Experts February 14 10:53 AM

My 1988 Mazda RX-7 Add Coolant light came on and buzzes like crazy. I opened the reservior and it is full. All the belts seem intact and tight enough. What else should I check? Also, is the warning light simply an electronic switch that turns on if the reservoir level is low, or is in something in the engine that turns it on? For example the winshield washer fluid warning simply measures the level in the fluid reservoir bottle. When it lights up it is just because it is a low level not becuase there is a failure.

Optional Information:
1988 Mazda RX-7 Convertibl Rotary

Already Tried:
Checked the fluid reservoir, and the belts.

There is a white plastic jug type in front of the radiator, is this the reservoir you are talking about?   I am not sure what you mean by a remote reservoir. Is this the one you mean?

I removed the plastic reservoir and there are no wires coming out of the bottom of it. However on the top of the radiator where this is a cap that has a symbol that you should not touch it with your hand, is a wire coming out of the top. I suspect this is the sensor. When I removed the cap it appears that although the plastic reservoir is full the radiator is not. Looks like there are fins or something in there. Should I pour antifreeze in there?

YES THE JUG YOU TOOK OF IS AN OVERFLOW JUG AND DOESN'T HAVE THE SENSOR. IT IS IN THE RADIATOR YOU SHOULD TOP IT OFF WITH COOLANT. ALSO IF THE RADIATOR IS LOW YOU SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT THERE ARE NO LEAKS IN THE COOLING SYSTEM (IF YOU ARE UNSURE HOW TO DO THIS TAKE IT TO A SHOP) THE COOLANT HAS TO BE GOING SOMEWHERE. AN INSPECTION AT A SHOP WILL BE A LOT CHEAPER THAN RUNNING THE ENG. HOT AND CAUSING DAMAGE. HOPE THIS HELPSImages available only to Customers.

I called my mechanic and he told me to top off the radiator and replace the radiator cap. He said that because the plastic reservoir was full but the radiator was not and that the cap was not creating the vacuum. It seemed to work.
