I have a Mazda 626 LX-2001, my engine light came on last night. What could cause the engine light to come on. I have had my belts replaced, oil change, transmission changed. What else could be the problem.

There is hard to tell what could be wrong.It might be also a coincidence to came after you just did these repairs,so could be something else not related with what you done to it.The best way to find out is to go to a Auto Zone store,and they can extract the code for you (for free),and only after that you will know were you have to look for in order to fix the problem.
