1994 Lincoln cont 3.8 v6     120,000. m iles in excellant condition the car starting to overheat when you drive usually with in the first 5- 10 miles The digital temp gauge goes to top of normal range and the chime bell starts to sound ... if you ignore the bells and temp gauge after a short period of time (5-10 miles). the bell stops sounding and the temp will return to normal. I have had a mechanic tell me that this condition is caused by a headcasket leaking into water jacket.   And after it gets warm enough the leak is sealed. To correct the problem the head gaskets will need to be replaced and heads ground. Does thid sound logical to you ??

This is more than likely your problem. Ford had a lot of problems with the headgaskets on these engines. The best way to determine for sure if it is a headgasket is to remove the spark plugs and put the cylinder you are checking at top dead center and put compressed air into the cylinder. Remove the radiator cap and look to see if the antifreeze is pushing out of the radiator. If it is then you need headgaskets. Most of the time it is either cylinder #3 or cylinder #4. You should also have the heads checked for cracks and warpage.

I would not drive it to Michigan unless you are planning on putting in a new engine probably somewhere in between. Flat rate time is 10.8 hours. Multiply that by the hourly rate of the shop plus a head gasket set (which includes all the gaskets needed) is around $80 from Napa and new head bolts for enough to do both heads is around $40. Plus antifreeze oil and filter. The machine shop charges vary to have them checked for cracks and warpage.
