I have a 1990 Lexus LS 400 that won't crank in the morning when it is cold. However,it cranks all day as soon as it is warm.I replaced the batteries, but the problem persists. Is there a cold crank in lexus?

Optional Information:
1990 Lexus LS 400

Already Tried:
I took it to a mechanic and he changed the Igniters(ignition coil),but the problem persists. Then he is asking $2500 to change the wiring harness, but it didn;t make sense to me since the first diagnosis was wrong.

Hi!

Am I correct in saying that the car turns over but doesn't fire into life?

Cheers

Yes it turns over and does not come to life in the mornings.Once it evr cranks and warms up,it runs all day and must crank as long as it is warm. For examle,it came to life yesterday morning and i drove it all day and parked. Then woke up this morning and it won't come to life, but turns real good.

The next time it has sat overnight, when you put the key in, turn it to the position to just before it cranks (all electrics are on but engine off) and listen very carefully for a buzzing or humming sound from the back of the car. It should last for approximately 2 seconds then stop.

This is the fuel pump priming. It may be easier if you get a beautiful assistant (!!!!!!) to turn the key as you listen at the fuel filler with the fuel cap off.

If you do not hear the pump priming then this points to your problem.

Let me know what you hear and we'll take it from there.

Best wishes

Geordie,
I turned it on as you instructed with the help of a friend and heard no sound. My friend thinks is the fuel pump or filter, but a technician says the fuel pump is fine. The last time I changed oil in Super lube, they talked about cleaning the PCV valve, but I declined. The problem started soon afterwards.

Sincerly,

Isaiah

It is more likely to be the fuel pump relay. After an overnight or good long stand, the fuel pump should prime straight away as soon as you turn the key to the on position to initiate the fuel pressure ready for cranking.

Do all of the electrics come on (dash lights etc) when you put the key in the on position?
