Sent to Car Experts July 30 09:53 AM

The radio on my '94 Range Rover cuts off when the brake is applied and cutts off intermittently when the turn signals are engaged. This problem seems to come and go. The blower for the climate control doesn't operate at full power the majority of the time but it does have moments of full power. To top things off, I was stranded yesterday after returning to my RR from a short trip in the drugstore. The motor will not turn over at all. Any idea if these issues are related? Please help me identify the source of this problem.
Thanks.

the first thing i would check would be the fuse links that connect at the positive battery terminal they corrode and fail all the time...they come in a kit and need to be cut and sealed with heat shrink tubing...

Reply to JONATHAN's Post: would this cause the issues with the radio and the climate control loosing full power when braking or using turn signals?

absolutely......this is the first place we look when dealing with these issues everyday....i'm the jaguar shop foreman at a jaguar land rover dealer in santa monica california...i deal with the land rover side of things quite often and those fuse links are the most common problem and where i would start....there are other possibilities but this is definitely where i would start

Reply to JONATHAN's Post: I am not very mechanically inclined so hang in there with my questions...
Are refering to the cables that connect to the battery? Are these cables something I can buy at a auto supply store?

I still don't know how the battery could affect the radio and climate control fan while I am driving the vehicle?

Thank you for your time, I look forward to your next response.

no i'm not talking about the actual cables...there are smaller wires which don't use fuses but special wire called fusible link wire that burns away in case of a short....there are four or five of them that attach near the positive cable....they power the climate control, instrument panel,radio,etc.....when they get corroded and old they loose good connection and cause problems as you describe....they come in special small kit that you have to buy at a rover dealer or independent rover part specialist...they are made specifically for your car to fix/replace those connections...infact if you don't feel comfortable using a heat gun or soldering its something you might want a shop to do....they go bad all the time and its the first place we look at when a customer complains of these symptoms

Reply to JONATHAN's Post: could thoes cables you are refering to also cause the engine to loose some power? For instance, a few times I noticed the vehicle had a boost of power when accelerating.

Thank you again, I really appriciate your patience with these questions.

Tim Nelson

that is possible also....these are the power feeds to the majority of the vehicles control modules, switches, relays etc....if these links are bad they will cause all sorts of issues...when there is not enough power to a circuit that feeds more than one device, the devices that are more dominant and pull more current will draw as much as they can and the ones that need less current will not completely function or in some cases turn off

Reply to JONATHAN's Post: I took a look under the hood and it appears the fusible link has been repaired already with the replacement part you refered to. Could a wire have come undone or something? If there are some burned out wires do I have to order a new fusible link or can the replacement part be repaired?

Did I mention earlier that the engine seems to loose power at times?

Anyway...I went out this afternoon to see if I could get the motor to turn over and it did after struggling but then it died out again. I then jumpped the battery and the RR started and I left it run for about 30 min before shutting it down. Could this still be the cause you were telling me about? You know, I also hear a noise from the climate control or possibly at the windshield area when the RR is running even when the climate controls are all in the off position. Is this normal?

I also smell a very rich fuel smell comming from the vehicle, the interior even smells a bit like fuel.

Thanks so much.
