Question

For a Hyundai Expert

Sent to Car Experts October 30, 2007 5:56 p.m.

for a hyundai elantra gt '02. car has been running very sluggish. we had a transmission flush and changed spark plugs and spark plug wires. did not change transmission filter -- all did not fix problem & it's getting worse. today after driving it about 2 wks since at shop, it is mainly running sluggish when idling or at a stoplight after driving. seems ok when driving (pressing on gas pedal). today, when in park, rpm's went up and down quickly -- from 4000rpm to 1000pm, back up to 3000, down to 1500 and then finally stayed at 4000. when at stoplight when driving, idling at about 4000 and very sluggish. we wonder if it is a vacuum problem. MIDAS said they'd do a diagnostic, but we don't know if that will help and also if we really need to go to hyundai dealership. we will definately add more money for you if you can help more with this problem-just have a very tight budget right now. thanks so much! catherine

i asked a ? last night but hadn't heard back. when my husband and i read up on the iac valve it said that a problem with that valve causes problems exactly like what we were having. can we just replace that valve and not do the other stuff you recommended (also decarbonize the throttle body assm and have injectors cleaned) or is it best to do that also? also, when we called the hyuandai dealership they also recommended to replace the position sensor (that controls the throttle) -- do you also recommend this too? if we buy the parts -- the iac valve and the position sensor -- is it easy enough for us to replace it ourselves? do you have an diagrams for this kind of work that you can send to us? finally, should we also replace the transmission filter? thanks so much for your help. i'd love to pay more if you reply back to us and to give additional feedback. thank you, catherine
