Hello, I have a 2002 or 2003 Hyundai Elantra, manual transmission. It's been running great until very recently. What started happening was sometimes when the car was off, it wouldn't turn over. I'd turn the key but nothing would happen. What I'd do is pump the clutch a bit while turning the key, and it would start up. However, every day this began happening more and more frequently, until the other day, when the car would simply not start. The car works fine (there are no problems shifting gears or anything) besides this one problem. I am able to start the car by bump-starting it (rolling down a hill, then putting it in first and releasing the clutch). Any ideas before I take it in?

Hello

These standard shift cars have a safety switch located under the dash that usually makes contact with movement of the clutch pedal. When you depress the clutch the car should start, it sounds like the switch either came loose or it's in need of an adjustment.

You described this problem very well. If you're not sure how to fix this on your own, consult with a trained professional. If the switch came loose or needs an adjustment this wouldn't be a very costly repair, it should be under $30.00. If the switch is defective, expect to pay more.

Reply to Dan's Post: Okay, thanks for the response. One quick question: do you know if this type of thing would be covered under the Hyundai warranty (or any warranty in general)? The car has 40 or 50 thousand miles on it, so I believe the engine is still be under the factory warranty.

I really don't know too much about this and how to fix it, so I just assume take it in to get it fixed. (That's why I want to know if it is the type of thing I can get for free at the dealership.)

Also: this doesn't sound like a problem with the ignition then?

Thanks again!

Hello Tyler

If you purchased the car new I think it would be covered. That may be the case if you bought it used too. Hyundai offered a good warranty for most of their cars, 10 year / 100,000 mile on most.

I don't think it's an ignition problem because you mentioned movement of the clutch pedal got the engine started.

Please ACCEPT if you're happy with the advice you received.

Thank You!
