The airbags in our 2002 GMC Envoy did not deploy during ...

The airbags in our 2002 GMC Envoy did not deploy during accident. This was a roll over with major damage to the drivers side crushed from the front to the rear. The car was airborne hit front then rolled over side or frontal air bags did not deploy. Car had 46,000 miles. Is this common that airbags do not deploy? If so when do they deploy? The only thing that saved my son's life was his seat belt.
