timing adjustment on a 88 gmc 4.3L

how do i adjust the timing on a 88 gmc 1500 pick up with a 4.3 v6. The haynes manual said that turning the cap does no good. i believe i am a few degrees off. when i hold the gas just a little bit at a slow idle i almost stall. as long as i give it no gas or alot its ok though.
