1984 gmc suburban 350 vin L do i need cat. converters

i just purchased a 1984 gmc high sierra suburban with the 350 v8 vin L and i am not sure if it needs a smog pump/cat. converters it has a new exhaust but no cats. also does not look like it ever had a smog pump. vin # 1G5EK16L1EF520940

no it does not need them... you only need them if your state requires them... but i think it may be grandfathered in....
