cat food in my 1989 gmc jimmy fuel tank

i have a 1989 gmc jimmy 4.3L and i need to know what the process is for removing foreign matter from the fuel tank.i drove to the gas station,noticed some peices of cat food under the cap,i brushed the pieces off,filled the tank and drove home.i asked my neighbors' son about it and he admitted to putting the food in the tank.the maximum number of miles i drove with the food in the tank is about 10.is it safe?will it get filtered out? what am i supposed to do?
