I have 1997 GMC Sierra 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive pickup. It won't start. Has Spark. Cannot hear fuel pump run when ignitain is turned on. No fuel pressure at fuel filter when ignition is turned on. Is there a way to test the pump (bypass the fuel pump relay) to be sure it is the pump failing? The Chilton book talks about a prime/test connector ... I don't see it. Is there a way to test the relay?

The relay can be bypassed to check for operation. If you have a test light and a jumper wire this is easily done. First you locate the relay and remove it from the socket. using a test light look for the terminals that have power. Look at the side of the relay, most have a little diagram on them. If this is the case connect the two points that are not connected by the squiggly line on the diagram. The points on the diagram should be numbered and they correspond to the numbered markings on the bottom of the relay where the pins are. Place a jumper wire connecting power to the pin that has nothing on it on the diagram. This should power up your pump.

If your pump is still not working you probably need to replace it. Verify that there is no power to your fuel pump before doing this. Under the truck near the fuel tank you will find an electrical connector that powers up your pump. It is usually flat with 4 or five wires in it, and one end dissappears over the tank. Seperate the connector. And probe the contacts for power while someone tries to start the truck. There should be two wires with power, one is for the fuel gage , one os for the pump. And be sure the relay is plugged back in.(I recommend disconnecting the ignition coil wire and having the parking brake on for safety reasons while doing this.) If you have power replace the pump. of you do not have power we can adress the issue at that time.

Hope this helps,
Dave
