Question

I have a 2000 Yukon XL that is somehow leaking water ...

Sent to Car Experts April 24, 2006 5:25 p.m.

I have a 2000 Yukon XL that is somehow leaking water in to soak and i do mean soak the drivers floor mats and the rear passenger behind the driver. There is no evidence of water coming from the roof or window area.

Could this water be coming up from the underneath of the car?
Could this be coming from something in the engine or A/C condensation? We haven't run the a/c much be i know we had that problem on my husbands old jeep cherokee.
This water is not on the right side of the vehicle, just left side.

Hello!

There is a GM service bulletin out detailing likely causes of passenger compartment water intrusion on this vehicle. here is a copy:

________________________________________

Bulletin No.: 00-08-66-001

File In Section: 08 - Body and Accessories

Date: January, 2000

Subject:
Water Intrusion into Rear Compartment (Replace Primary weatherstrip /Adjust Doors if Necessary)

Models:
1999-2000 Cadillac Escalade
1999-2000 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Utility Models (Tahoe Z71 and Limited, Yukon Denali)
1999 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Utility Models (Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon)
With Cargo Doors or Endgate (RPOs ZW9, E55)
Built Prior to the Production Dates shown

View Full Image

Condition
Some owners of the above listed vehicles may comment on water entering into the rear compartment area

Cause

Cargo Doors
The following conditions may cause water intrusion:

The weatherstrip carrier may be allowing water to enter at the upper radius of the door opening, traveling down to the sill area into the rear compartment

The rear door may be misaligned at the top, outer edge, causing "overcompression" of the primary and auxiliary seals at the left rear defogger (RPO C49) switch area.

The rear door may be misaligned side-to-side, causing poor contact to the auxiliary weatherstrip at the top of the door.

The left rear door vertical weatherstrip mucket (insulator) may not be horizontal on contact with the primary weatherstrip

Endgate
The current weatherstrip may allow water intrusion at the electrical contact on the left and right side of the rear compartment

There is another, detailing forward door water leaks which result in the carpet becoming wet:

_____________________

Bulletin No: 01-08-64-001A

Date: March, 2001

Subject:
Front Floor carpet Wet/Musty Odor
(Replace Rear Door Water Deflector)

Models: < cellSpacing=2 cellPadding=1> < vAlign=top> <>2000-2001 <>Chevrolet and GMC C/K Utility Models (Tahoe, Yukon, Yukon Denali)

Some customers may comment that the front floor carpet is wet or has a musty odor

Cause

The rear door water deflector may not be seated along the bottom, allowing water to enter the vehicle and travel to the front carpet or carpet padding

Correction

Replace the rear door water deflector

REPLIED Check Mark

If you call your local GM dealer and describe the problem, and ask them to perform the repair procedure detailed in General Motors technical service bulletin #01-08-64-001A it will resolve the water intrusion problem that is causing your front floor carpeting (and rear floor carpeting, as stated in your question) to become wet... The water is entering at the rear door, and running forward under the carpeting to the lower spot in the LF of the floor pan area, where it soaks upward through the carpeting.

i have just read your follow-up to my reply and see that you may be on to something. I sure hope that you are right because this seems like an easier fix then what i was worrying about. I had called a local GMC dealer and talked witht he service department and this guy acted like he had no idea what the problem might be. "Bring it in for a water specialist to review the problem".

I am going to go ahead and accept your answer and hope that it is money well spent!!!
