Question

Why my car shuts off when I come to a stop

Sent to Car Experts March 25, 2007 5:09 p.m.

I have a 1992 Cavalier, 2.2L,OHV, MPFI four cyclinder engine. The problem, when the car has warmed up for about 1/2 and when you come to a stop the car will shut off. When I put the car in park to start it the car will start right away. When I place the car into drive again it will shut off. When I wait for 1/2 hour the car will then start. I have noticed that before the car does this and as I slow down the car will try to stall. As long as I try not to slow down I can keep the car running. Then as soon as I slow down and stop the car will stall. I can then place the car into park and it will stay running as long as I keep it in park. Then when I switch to drive it will stall. As I have said, if I wait for about 1/2 hour then I can place the car into drive then go. Help.

You are experiencing a bad tcc solenoid. This is the solenoid that locks your torque converter. I have no pictures of it. It is located under the side cover of the transmission. Its and easy fix. You need the tcc solenoid and a side cover gasket. These you can get at any gm dealer. The pt# for the side cover gasket is 8688169. There are two different part numbers for the solenoid depending on the application. Its best to have them look it up when you purchase it. It will be either 8689901 or 8689902. Good luck!
