1995 geo metro engine knocking

i have a 1995 geo metro that sounds like the engine is knocking, however i am not sure if that is the real problem. It makes this ticking noise when i am at a stop but when i am actually driving it seems to be fine and my check engine light is on anytime i put the brake on..someone told me it could be a valve ??? and to try using sea foam have you ever heard of this.

Please help !!!!! this is my only transportation and i have two kids one infant.
