S10 erratic idle

i have a 1995 S10 with a 4.3 Vin "W", it has an erratic idle,(800-1800)stalls and at times has a late shift. at times it runs fine and idles fine, other times when coming to a stop you have to really step on the brakes because of the high idle

 That's usually caused by unmetered air entering the system. Check it good for vacuum leaks. Check places like the throttle body base gasket, PCV hose and pinch off the brake booster hose to see if there is an internal leak there. Also remove the EGR valve and see if there is any carbon chunks getting caught in there. If you have compressed air, blow out the ports to get rid of any loose carbon while it's off.
