Question

Intake Manifold Gaskets

Sent to Car Experts March 03, 2005 1:03 a.m.

GM wont acknowledge problems with their chevy 3.8 liter engines concerning the lower manifold gasket failures. I dont think that I have a leak yet, (50,000 miles) but to replace the gaskets is about $1000. Should I go ahead and have them replaced? What is my next step? Thank You!

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Tom,
The good news is you don't have leak. The bad news is when and if you do get one, it usually leaks into the engine before showing signs externally, causing the oil to try to make a milkshake with the coolant, potentially causing all sorts of problems-- up to compete engine failure. I don't believe that you are gauranteed to have a leak, but I understand that you wish to be proactive and possibly take care of this before a problem arrises. If you don't wish to pay for this now, be diligent and watch your coolant level, and check your oil frequently (weekly!, especially under the oil fill cap which is where it will usually appear first).

Hope this helps, here are some others who have not been so lucky.
