I own a 1997 Merc Grand Marquis and I have been told that the grease seals on the rear axle need replaced. What is a fair price for this repair?

Hello!

Are you referring to the axle seals, located at the ends of the axles where the wheels attach, or the pinion seal, located where the driveshaft attaches? It is rare for all of these things to need replacement at once, and these are 2 very different jobs...

On this model, the axles first have to be removed from the vehicle, and tehn the wheel bearings have to be removed from the axles in order to get the seals off of the axles. the process of removing the wheel bearings from the axles destroys the bearings, so they must be replaced as part of the repair.

THe parts required are 2 axle seals, 2 wheel bearings, and 2 retainer rings.

The falt rate time required for the repair on both sides totals 2.6 hours, times whatever labor rate the shop you are using charges per hour. The national median labor rate is around $75 per hour, but this does vary somewhat by what part of the country you live in.

Here are approximate parts prices (actual cost varies by brand and quality of the replacement parts used...

2 Wheel bearings @ 60.00 each = 120.00

2 Seals @ 7.00 each = 14.00

2 lock rings @ 8.00 each = 16.00

2.6 hrs labor @ 75.00 = 195.00

total repair cost should be around $345 plus tax
