Question

2002 Explorer Transmission

Sent to Car Experts October 21, 2006 11:12 p.m.

I have a 2002 Eddie Bauer Explorer that I bought Aug. 2002. In June 2003 I took it to the dealer and said it was getting stuck between 2nd and 3rd gear, that if I released the acc. it would shift. I was told the transmission was fine but they had recalibrated it. When I went in for my next oil change I told the service rep I was still having the same problem and he told me it was fine, that I shouldn't second guess the techs. The problem has continued occasionally since then and lately it's been making a loud scraping noise noise when I accelerate and the rpms are above 2000. Today I was told that the transmission needs to be overhauled. I've been asking Ford to deal with this for three years....could it have been fixed back in 2003 and saved me the $2300 they want to overhaul it now?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Hi!

Yes this is something they should have fixed from day 1. They are just giving you the run around on it. I have seen this a few times now that a dealer will say they checked it out or did a fix and then blow you off when you come back with the same thing going on.
Now thats its out of any kind of warranty they tell you O you need a overhaul.

I would do some calling around to a few trans shops and see what you can find out on the trans and how much they charge for a overhaul. The other thing you can do is call a few junk yards for a price on a used trans or try a few shops to see what they charge for installing a used trans.

Not all Dealers are bad. The few dealers I have worked for in the past put the customer first.

I just want to make sure I understand, because I will accept your reply. When I got the car I was told that only a Ford mechanic should work on the transmission because of the way the new transmissions were made. I honestly don't remember who if it was the guy who sold it, a friend or the customer svc guy who told me this. Does this sound right to you? This is what kept me going back to the closest dealer even when I've been dissatisifed - I've had good luck with most dealers in the past.
