Question

After disconnenting the alternator, how do you fine

Sent to Car Experts October 21, 2006 10:01 p.m.

After disconnecting the alternator, how do you find room to remove it from the engine compartment of 1999 Mitsubishi Galant DE: engine 4G64/G (2.4L, 4 cyl, single overhead camshaft)? The 1990-00 Chilton's Repair Manual for Mitsubishi Galant/Mirage/Diamante lists removal of the water pump pulleys as one of the alternator removal steps for the 2.4L engine. I was able to completely disconnect the alternator without removing the water pump pulleys. Is removal of the water pump pulleys necessary and, if so, is its purpose merely to facilitate access to disconnect the alternator, or is its purpose to make room for removing the disconnected alternator through the wheel well? Alternatively, rather than removing the alternator through the wheel well, it is better to move/remove some of the plumbing/cables above the alternator to allow it to be removed from the top of the engine? Finally, could my jack stand under the rear lower control arm u-shaped support be interfering with removing the alternator through the wheel well?

Optional Information:
1999 Mitsubishi Galant DE 4G64, 2.4L SOHC

Already Tried:
I disconnected the alternator without removal water pump pulleys. I tried unsucessfully to remove the alternator by lowering it through the wheel well and by raising it through opening between engine and right wheel shock absorber housing without disconnecting any of the plumbing/hoses/cables.
