Service Engine soon and Trac off light on all the time after brake

Sent to Car Experts October 21 2006 at 5:08 AM

Hello,
I replaced the front brakes (rotors and pads) on my 2000 Buick Regal GS. (100K miles) I opened the valves on the calipers to relieve pressure in order to compress the brake pistons. Did not want to back flush the fluid into the ABS system. I read that contaminants from the calibers could be forced back in the the ABS system and cause damage. Parts replaced and the front brakes system was bleed to insure no air was in the system. Brakes work fine. Now the problem: a day after this the service engine soon (left side of the dash) and the trac off light comes on. At first it would go away now it stays on all the time. A low end code reading tool does not detect any codes. What would your suggestion be in further troubleshooting this problem.

hello repair dude- my name is robert- you say you have checked for codes- what systems did you check for codes? many times when a power train code is set, the computer for the abs will disable the abs and traction control until the powertrain codes are repaired. if the service engine soon light is on, that code must be diagnosed and repaired before the abs and traction light will go off.

Reply to robert standley's Post: Engine codes were checked and no codes were enabled. Is there there a difference between the two service engine soon indicators on the dash one on the left and one on the right? The left one is the one that stays on. Since no engine codes were detected, again it was a low end code reader, what would be my next step?

if your service engine soon light is on there should be codes stored. i am not sure what your low end code reader is capable of. you may try autozone if there is one in your area and have them scan your vehicle for codes. also, there is a remote possibility that you are confusing the light with the "service vehicle soon" light. many low end code readers do not have the ability to read body function codes. if this is the case, you will need to have the codes read with a professional scan tool, which will not only read codes, but will view the computers data stream as well. without knowing what the code is that is stored, i can not offer any other advice. please press accept if this helps. thank you and God Bless.

the only way i can proceed is to know what the specific codes are. once again, if the lights are on there is a code stored. if no codes or data can be read, then you are having a problem with serial data, which could be quite extensive in diagnosis. i would suggest taking the vehicle to a reputable repair facility.
