Mercedes wont shift go into gear

I have a 2000 Mercedes S430. For some reason, the shifter does not want to go into gear when I first start it up. If I ave used the car, it works ok, but when I have to start it again after longer than 3 hours, it gives me hell going into gear! What is the problem?
