Question

Problem with too lean a system #1&2

Sent to Car Experts October 17, 2006 3:42 p.m.

Hi;

I have a 1998 Ford Expedition 5.4L 330cid V8 FI (L). My check engine light came on and I used my OBD2. I came up with a PO171 & PO174, system to lean,bank 1& 2.
I replaced both O2 sensors on bank 2, but only the downstream O2 sensor on bank 1.
I still have the same code reading. I checked the PCV valve and it has a vacuum, not a lot and the valve itself doesn't click like it should when you put your finger over the end of the valve and take your finger away. Also one of the rubber elbows has been sucked in by the vacuum and the center of the elbow is almost closed.
This is driving me nuts, I hope you can solve this problem for me.   THANKS

amedee;

I broke the plastic line taking the collapsed
rubber elbow off. It was very brittle from the heat of the engine. Didn't have either part at the part stores, so I had to go to the Ford dealer,and he had to order it. As soon as I get the parts,and see if that resolves the problem, I
will immediately get back to you. Thanks for your patience.

Thank u for keeping me updated. I hear ya! I know about the brittle plastic. Just remember, the check engine light will not go off by itself right away. U will have to disconnect the battery for about 5 minutes.

Well u have not hit the accept button for this particular question. I have not gotten a penny! U only made a deposit. I am still more than happy to help u. Just be patient!

With that said, we can continue to work through this. THere are a lot of reasons why these codes can come up. We have to go through things and test them individually.

What are u reading codes with? Is it just a code reader, or a full bidirectional scanner?

When you say the evap system monitor, are u talking about the check engine light or the service engine soon light? Also on my diagram, I dont see a icon for an egr light. Could u do me a favor and tell me what number it is on this diagram. I want to be sure we are on the same page. Thanks a bunch!

Oh,Ok Good So just the check engine light is on with the lean codes. What we are going to have to do is make sure there is no other air or vacuum leaks AT ALL! ANY AIR LEAK AFTER THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR ALL THE WAY TO THE CYLINDER WILL CAUSE THE LEAN CODES INCLUDING THE INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS! AFTER ALL THAT IS CHECKED WE CAN MOVE ON THE THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. When it goes bad it underestimates air flow coming into the engine and the computer flags the lean codes! Not kidding! This is a big problem with fords!

AMEDEE;

The only way I know how to check for a vacuum leak is to spray area with carb cleaner which effects the running engine, if there is a leak'
I did that and the engine kept running smoothly,so I don't know,but I don't think there are anymore leaks.

Good! Looks like we are headed i the right direction. Just be sure to spray around the intake manifold gaskets and check the snorkel for rips and cracks. Also make sure there is not any tube that has fallen off the snorkel! If it all checks out good, I would rec a mass air flow sensor.

The snorkel is the black rubber tube from the air filter housing to the throttle body on the intake manifold.

   The mass air sensor is possibly the cure for this?? O.K. I'll go with that,if you think this is the solution.

To be honest with you, yes! It is very common for this sensor to go bad! If u are sure there is no air or vacuum leaks anywhere under the hood, ANYWHERE, than yes, replace the mass air flow sensor!
