Question

Transmission fluid

Sent to Car Experts October 17, 2006 3:38 p.m.

I have a 1990 Honda Accord (man. trans) that I am in need of replacing the transmission fluid. I have found the pan to where I can drain out the fluid but I have no idea where I can add fluid. And should I flush out the fluid? If so, how do I do that? What type of transmission fluid should I use? And is there anything else I need to know?

Optional Information:
1990 Honda Accord F22A4

Hi if this is a manual transmission you need only to remove drain plug on the side of transmission and drain old transmission fluid you will need a drain pan and a filler tube that you can open and shutt so you dont loose a lot of your fluid putting it back in the trans you will also need a ratchet and extenishion 3/8 drive to remove the drain plug spec/fluid type 10w/30 or 10w/40 when adding new fluid you dont have a dip stick so fill transmission untill fluid starts to run out of the transmission then reinstall the drain plug this should cover changing the trans fluid on this model Thanks, for your question.

But the thing is, I've found a drain plug on the bottom of the passenger side (opposite side of where the engine oil pan is). Is that not the transmission plug? Or is that something completely different. And if it isn't the transmission, where I would I go about looking for it?

Hi the drain plug should be on the side of the transmission the drain plug should have a head on it that looks like the head on a 3,8 drive ratchetits close to where the cv axel goes into the tranmissionthis will be the same hole you put the fluid back in if you cant find it I will find a picture of its location. Thanks,

Al

Uh oh. Then what's the plug on the bottom-passenger side then? And it would be helpful if I could get a visual of some sorts. And do I just use Honda's transmission oil? Is it only available at dealerships? Or can I find them online. Thanks so much Al.
